Sony Ericsson, what are they up to?

Pictured right is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, it has a 3.2" touch screen and is running a Sony Ericsson edited version of Windows Mobile 6.5. It is set for release in November, which is great. But Sony Ericsson seems to have just shot itself in the foot by launching the new Xperia X10, running Android. It isn't standard Andriod, we haven't seen that in a phone in a long time, since the HTC Magic in fact. This phone is the earlier thought Rachael but is now called the Xperia X10. It will come with Android 1.6, which is a bit of a shame considering Android 2 is official. It has a 4" WVGA touchscreen, which unfortunately doesn't have multi-touch, yet anyway. It has a nice 1GB of internal memory, and a mircoSD slot for up to 16GB cards, with an 8GB one being bundled. There is also a nice 3.5mm headphone socket, so this is really a great multimedia phone. It also has a 8.1MP camera, but only LED flash, no Xenon unfortunately. It also features a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor which makes this phone quite a sprinter. It is going to be available in Q1 of 2010, so expect it sometime in January or February after possibly showing at MWC in January. Sony Ericsson has put its on custom interface on it, called the UX (short for user eXperience), featuring Mediascape and Timescape, a bit like MotoBlur. It seems like Sony is breaking away from its proprietary sockets, like M2 media cards and no headphone socket. I think this is good for Sony, but I don't see the point of the Xperia X2 now. It seems pointless. This new X10 seems to be in competition with the HTC HD2 for a big touchscreen, really fast, internet based mobile phone. And I think it'll fly off the shelves. The official Sony Ericsson site for it is here.

Rachael is the name of Sony Ericsson's customized UI which is placed over the standard Android OS. It is named after Blade Runner's love interest. You'd do well to check your facts before writing these blog posts.

Well, from my sources, The UI is called UX, short for user eXperience.

@James - Yes, SE renamed their UI from Rachael to UX. But to quote from the above article, This phone is the earlier thought Rachael but is now called the Xperia X10", which clearly indicates you thought the PHONE was codenamed Rachael, when it was the UI's codename.

@Anonymous @ 04:47 - Yes, I *may* suck (note I managed to spell "suck" the proper English way, not sloppy chavvy miss out a letter because I think it's cool) but I have around 15 years of mobile device experience AND qualifications in the technical side of ICT - you were probably still in nappies when I had my first mobile phone!

But it was thought to be called the Rachael phone, but in fact the Rachael is in reference to the UX.

No it was NEVER thought the phone would be called Rachael. It was only ever the code name for SE's custom Android skin, which you rightly pointed out is now called UX. The Experia X10 was originally the Experia X3 before being renamed X10.

Ok, I admit the mistake about the Rachael theme.

I think that this "anonymous person" should be ashamed of himself, he might know a bit but he got stuff wrong about the Xperia X10, not the Experia X10.

X2 will be priced much lower that the X10, they will address some-what different segments hence will not clash with each other.
