James' thoughts on the Apple event

So the event was dominated by iPhone OS 4, which I wasn't particularly impressed by. Yes, iPhone OS 4 is a major improvement in some respects, but there are many ways which it's not. First, it's missing out the iPod Touch 1st Gen and iPhone 1st Gen (or 2G, whatever you call it) completely. Not even a hint of reaching those devices. Secondly, one of the main parts of the new OS, multitasking, won't reach iPhone 3G owners and iPod Touch 2nd Gen owners (I think this also includes 3rd Gen 8GB). With so many people saying they're staying with a 3G waiting for the 4G, they're still not going to get multitasking. And for those who can't afford an upgrade and are keeping their 3G, no multitasking at all!

Folders is a nice introduction, but it's on jailbroken devices anyway so we all knew it is possible. Mail is good, but just keeping up with Blackberry. Gamecentre is good and beats some other games in that respect. On a portable device it is the best achievements but I didn't like how Jobs said "20000 games" because they're not really games, they're just little fun apps you might play for 20 minutes at most. A game is something you can play for hours on end- and you can with a PSP or DS.

Ibooks needed to be there so people didn't use Kindle books between their iPhone and iPad. iAd is what I'm fuming about. It will work on every device with this update (Apple wouldn't want to miss out on that).  But it's just a sneaky way for them to make money. I mean, what other OS has ads built in. This was obviously a show for the developers- not the consumers.

Overall I'm not that impressed by it. The iPad waiting till autumn is another sting in the tail which just isn't necessary. Why can't they get it out on time?

So your biggest complaint is that it OS4 wont give all the goodies on older phones. Tell me..when Nokia bring out a new OS version for symbian does is run on my nokian communicator which is 5 years old..does windows 7 run on my 386. Come on sometimes a major new feature just cant run on all the old machines.

Iad is only going to run on the ads that opt it into their development..whats the difference between that and the apps that already have in app advertising..and do you complain about the adverts on tv and on all the websites you visit..i mean is google being sneaky by charging for advert placement. This is way for more developers to give FREE aps and garner click through revenue which will encourage some more creative thinking.

I would have liked to see them tell us how many of the apps from DS/PSP etc have versions on the Iphone as that would give a more valid picture than saying 20000 apps-as you correctly state there are many you will play just once or twice, but there are a lots of good ones too, and lets be honest when apple brought out this device i dont think they seriously wanted or considered the gaming potential.

About the compatibility issue, I don't think it's unreasonable that one of the most widely bought phones ever should get the full software update.

About DS/PSP games having versions for the iPhone, I think that's the wrong direction. Games need to be fully invented for the iPhone, otherwise they end up putting on-screen buttons and the game isn't what it's meant to be.
