Should Apple let the Pre sync with iTunes?

Long ago Palm announced a new phone called the Pre. It offered lots of new and interesting things, not least of which its lovely webOS, but the main thing that caught to light was the fact that it offered seamless iTunes syncing. This was not using the infamous DoubleTwist method, which is a separate application but does mean the device itself would sync with iTunes automatically. Palm themselves have admitted that they are hacking to make this syncing feature work. Then the back and forth game began, when iTunes 8.2.1 was released a few months ago, it mentioned that “Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple's iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.” Then, when Palm released webOS version 1.1, it mentioned that it “resolves an issue preventing media sync from working with latest version of iTunes (8.2.1)". What it did was spoof the Pre's USB Vendor ID to make it look like an iPod to iTunes, yet not to the root computer drive. iTunes 9 ended the Pre’s syncing capabilities for the time being. So if Pre users are absolutely desperate for iTunes syncing then they could download an earlier version, but they would of course not receive the new iTunes features which you can see in this post here, which I recommend you read if you are iTunes user of looking for an alternative to iTunes. In my view, it was a bit childish of Palm to be so persistent with their iTunes syncing and not to use any 3rd party software, which would do the job nicely. But I believe that Apple has every right to disapprove of Palm hacking their software and making a bit of a joke of their software.
