Nitrome News - Cold Storage

Nitrome is by far the best Flash games website on the planet. Despite the family-friendly feel and the occasional element of gameplay some may refer to as 'babyish', I've seen 30-year-olds humbled by the games, most of which who have become addicted for life. So here's the first in a new series of posts about Nitrome's games.

For Christmas, Nitrome has churned out a number of winter-themed games, the first of which is called 'Cold Storage'.

The objective of the game is simple - reach the top of the frozen cave by swinging from pole to pole.

Here is a normal pole:

Once the character has grabbed onto this, he will swing around and around and around until you press the 'up' button on your keyboard, at which point he will fly off in the direction he was swinging towards. It's all a matter of predicting how centrifugal force will affect the character's physical movement.

Here is an icy pole:

Icy poles work in the same way as normal poles, with one minor difference. The yeti will slowly slide down an icy pole until he falls off the end. The steeper the pole's gradient, the faster the yeti will slip.

Here's a super pole:

Your yeti will swing faster on a super pole.

Also, when the character swings off of a super pole, he goes into attack mode.

During attack mode, contact with an enemy will kill it outright, but attack mode ends when the yeti begins to fall.

Here is the beginning of a level:

And here's the end of a level:

So get from the top to the bottom. Simple. Just avoid falling:

Tips and Tricks

  • Swing into the frozen eskimos to free them. The more eskimos you free, the more points you get, and the more points you get, the better your chances of fame are! Larger eskimos give you more points.
  • In attack mode, you can smash through pale blue ice, but not dark purple rock.
  • If you spot a yellow ring anywhere in a level, try to go through it. Going through one of these rings will give you a super-boost. It's as if you're flying up the level for a couple of seconds!

  • Don't forget that you can steer yourself while you fly through the air, whether you're going up or down, and this can be useful for steering yourself towards poles.

Not a big fan of online games, personally, but some can be pretty addictive. Crazy Taxi on facebook being a prime example.
