Why Microsoft's biggest competitor is themselves

Windows 7 has so far been a huge success, but Vista was awful. But the thing with Vista was, that if you had the choice, you would downgrade to XP. But when you say downgrade, you really mean upgrade because XP is better than Vista. The same thing is happening with IE in some cases, people love their current IE7 and don't want to download a new version for their computer which won't be as good. So, in a way, Microsoft is shooting itself in the foot because they can't really force people to download a new copy of software. What Microsoft must do, is actually give an incentive to make people download new bits of software or upgrade from XP, because ideas such as "accelerators" mean nothing to people. They should say stuff like, "20% faster and 40% safer" which would make people download the latest version due to paranoia of safety.

But Microsoft are doing well with Windows 7 because there is an incentive for people to upgrade from Vista due to its rubbishness. Windows 7 has sold 234% more copies than Vista in the same period, and had smashed pre-order records. Microsoft shouldn't necessarily make rubbish products then improve on them, but just give an incentive to upgrade. That is what I think is the main reason for Windows 7 doing so well, people wanted to upgrade.
