Google gets Backgrounds

Google.com, but not Google.co.uk, now allows users to set their background image to something of their personal preference. They've already been accused of copying Bing, Microsoft's search engine, which has had the ability for a while. Bing of course doesn't allow you to alternate to custom backgrounds. But Google has taken the concept one step further and...
Well, go to http://www.google.com and click the link in the bottom left corner!

There are four ways you can add photos.
  • Upload a new photo from your computer.
  • Choose one of the photos submitted by the public.
  • Choose one of the photos recommended by Google staff.
  • Pick a picture from your Picasa Web Albums.
Find the photos like I did below and select it!

Once you've selected your photo you can double click it to set your background.
I now have a picture of my girlfriend as my Google wallpaper:

Google says:

Make your Google homepage feel more like, well, home! Choose your own image or photo to appear as the background to your Google homepage. You can choose an image from your Picasa Web photos, your computer or a Google public gallery.
This feature is distinct from iGoogle, which allows you to further customize your Google homepage with personalized gadgets.

How to add a background image

  1. Sign in to your Google Account in the top right corner of the Google homepage. Don't have one? It's easy to create a Google Account.
  2. Click Change background image in the bottom left corner of the Google homepage.
  3. Choose where to select your background image:

    • From my computer: Select an image saved on your computer.
    • My Picasa Web photos: Select an image from your Picasa Web Albums.
    • Public gallery: Select from public photos featured in Picasa Web Albums.
    • Editor's picks: Select from a set of Google recommended images.
  4. Once you've chosen your image, click Select at the bottom of the window. It may take a moment before your new Google homepage background appears.
You can remove your background image at any time by clicking Remove background image in the bottom left corner of the homepage.

Image requirements

When you upload a photo, it is saved as a photo in a new unlisted album in your Picasa Web Albums.
We recommend that you use images that are wider than they are tall (landscape orientation). Images must be at least 800 x 600 pixels and in one of the following formats: .jpeg, .tif, .tiff, .bmp, .gif, .psd (Photoshop), .png, .tga, and selected RAW formats. In Picasa, you can resize photos.
And it's compatible with the following browsers:
  • Google Chrome
  • Internet Explorer 7.x (Windows XP, Windows Vista)
  • Internet Explorer 8.x (Windows XP, Windows Vista)
  • Firefox 3.x (Windows XP, Vista, Mac OSX)
  • Safari 3 (Mac OSX)
  • Safari 4 (Mac OSX)
