iPhone OS 4.0 Summary

So here are the new features:

  • Multitasking which isn’t really multitasking but which is more like sticking a couple of processes in the background and putting an ergonomically-unfriendly bar at the bottom of the screen which can only be accessed by performing a home-screen double-tap which was previously assigned to getting to Spotlight Search.
  • Spell-check which will hopefully work.
  • Bluetooth keyboard connectivity, taking the ‘mobile’ out of ‘mobile phone’.
  • Setting your own wallpaper.
  • Tapping the screen while recording a video will now lead to that particular spot being focused on. There’s also a 5x digital zoom being added to the camera so spying on your neighbour across the street will be a whole lot easier. No word yet on whether or not more megapixels will be added to the mix.
  • Playlist creation, editing and nesting.
  • Sorting apps into various folders on the home screen is now possible, and easy to achieve.
  • Mail just got a whole lot better with a whole raft of new features which have been asked for all along. Syncing mail with more than one Exchange account at any one time and also merging two or more inboxes into one. Plus, threaded messaging is now achievable and attachments can be viewed within the Mail application.
  • iBooks… fail.
  • Device management among other Enterprise-related stuff.
  • Game Center, the Xbox Live of the Apple World. Multiplayer scoreboards and achievements.

Make of it what you will.
