iPad – Steve's Opinion

The iPad had a whole load of hype behind it but when the waves hit the shores there wasn’t a huge splash of excitement to totally wipe away all efforts drawn by Apple’s competitors in the sands of the tablet PC market. Instead there was just a small splash and some slightly shifted stones. People are still talking about it but not like people are still talking about Windows 7. The entire product line just relies on hype to carry it on and unfortunately the media generates a heck of a lot of it.
Prior to release the iPad was spinning the rumour mill around and around and around over and over again, with Apple dropping clues here and there leading us along and getting us drooling over the release and wanting to know more and more and more. Now that the iPad is out and about and we know practically everything about it Apple has sat back and put its feet up. Meanwhile the media picks up the job and decides to make sure everyone knows about the iPad by posting multitudinous article online.
So what’s my opinion?
I think the iPad is basically a big iPod Touch. It’s used as a communications device so I have no idea why there’s no camera embedded into the front via which video chats could have easily been initiated. I’m sure some company will jump at the chance to somehow implement one. Perhaps a clip-on webcam which connects to the device itself via USB? That’s one of my main complaints but otherwise there’s not a great deal of things I can complain about.
Of course, I could go on for hours and hours and hours about how the iPad is more or less just a big iPod Touch as I said at the start of the previous paragraph, but that’s just mundane and boring. I could also say how it’s a Mac Book with a touchscreen and no keyboard or track pad, but that’s just as tedious. Instead I’ll be daring and say the iPad is an entirely new product based on existing technologies. Of course, there’s a few new additions to the pot which is what makes the iPad worth considering.

  • The screen is, obviously, considerably larger. And unless you’re really stupid you’ll know that it’s fully multitouch to a level of power slightly higher than that of the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Despite the larger scale accuracy is seemingly better.

  • Apps are twice as large and there’s still an accelerometer in there somewhere. So that gives far more scope for developers. Much more screen space to use and a faster processor as well as more space for larger app file sizes. It’s a pity they’re costlier.

  • The whole device is a whole lot more customizable. Well, I must say that’s actually a bit of an exaggeration to be perfectly honest. Steve Jobs tried and failed to make wallpaper changing sound innovative. And you can do that on the iPhone/iPod Touch if you know how

  • The photo app works nicely. You can do all the stuff already accomplishable on the iPhone/iPod Touch, such as swiping to scroll and pinching to zoom. One thing I did like was flipping the device over to show someone else in front of you. A nice touch!

  • The price is nice and low. It starts at quite a low entry-level and even the weakest edition is quite kitted up. However, I shall refrain from boring you with lengthy lists of technical specifications. So find them out here instead.
So overall I like it but to be honest Apple relies on hype. There are devices out there which are far more powerfl but Apple is using it’s mirage of perfection as per usual, sending a flood of kool-aid across the globe. A few nice touches nevertheless. And that’s all I have to say about that.

@Anyonymous

With all due respect we have plenty of visitors who read these posts on a daily basis and contact us to say they enjoy reading. I'm not going to take literary advice from someone who obviously lacks the ability to recognize proper spelling and grammar. And as for 'blud', that's just bad.

And what the hell is a 'stuffer'?

My initial reaction when I saw the Apple iPad was confusion. What functionality does this device offer over and above the Apple iPhone? And what market is Apple aiming this device at?

I was scratching my head when the iPad came out wondering if it will take off and if it would compete with my iPhone... Some design friends are knocking it because it is impractical to do design work on without a stylist and others have been saying that it's basically a large iPod.

I agree with them both, but one has to realize that if a designer wants to design do it on your computer/laptop. Why would you want to do it on a 9.7" screen anyways. The iPad runs iPhone OS not OSX! If you have an iPod and think the iPad is lame...then simply don't buy it. I feel the Tablet in general is such a touchy category to deal with because it is basically a Netbook, but because it is a touchscreen people quickly compare it with touchscreen mobile phones and iPods.

I think the iPad will do well. The App Store will carry it along. If you think about it the iPhone is nothing special compared to the other mobile phones out there....it was the App store that made the iPhone stand out. The same will be true for the iPad.
....what do you think?

I think you're right in saying that the iPhone is nothing special compared to other phones. And the only thing which does it for the iPad is the inane amount of hype pushing it along. We'll just have to wait and see. The Microsoft Courier looks promising but something with Linux installed would be much more promising.

Android would do amazingly well if configured for 10-inch tablet usage.

There is the Archos 9, which if it ran Android would be a beast.
