Firefox No More

Firefox 3.6 just came out. The only difference between this release and the previous ones is that this time around I’m not excited. I used to defend Firefox zealously! But these days I’ve made the jump over to Chrome. And that’s where I’m going to stay.

Oh, so Personas can be used without having to install an add-on? Well, Chrome can install a huge range of themes without having to restart Firefox! That’s more than you can say for Mozilla’s browser unfortunately. Chrome wins.
Oh, so Firefox will tell you if plug-ins are out of date? Chrome updates them automatically!
Oh, so it’s a little bit faster than it was in the last version? Well, it’s still nowhere near as fast as Chrome, which is still light-years ahead of anything Mozilla’s brainchild can achieve. Firefox had better come up with something pretty good in the next release. Otherwise it’s going to start failing.
It’s all about innovation. Innovations which aren’t gimmicky will make a lot of news headlines, and then there’s more chance that your browser will be heard about. The chances are that if you make a proper innovation you’ll get nothing but positive review. That’s good news for your product.
Chrome has been getting a lot of good news as of late and Google has pulled out all the stops. Instead of relying on the somewhat monopolistic method of posting a Chrome advert on the Search page, Google has pasted full-scale Chrome posters on billboards across the UK. That’s never been done before.
Not with a browser at least.
I’d love to see what Firefox will have with the next version. It’ll also be interesting to see how Mozilla does if they can’t think of any innovations. The clock is ticking and time is running out. Maybe Firefox could start copying Chrome? Now there’s an Apple-like idea…
Comments will be appreciated!
