Smartphones are great, aren't they? They are fantastic little computers in their own right. Many of them have application stores, which can do just about everything. They are pioneering technology of today, and showing what the world can squeeze onto a tiny device. But they might be great computers, but I'm sorry, several of them are awful phones, most in fact. The only exception I can think of is Blackberry, they don't suffer from the fatigues of many smartphones.
One of many is battery life. You hear of reviewers saying that phones get a day's charge. I'm sorry, but that's frankly awful! My 2 year old Sony gets at least a week, as with most of my friends' "dumbphones". This is probably due to the fact that they are always connected to the internet through a 3G, Wifi, or GPS signal. You can literally see the difference after a decent spell on the internet or downloading something on the fly. I think these phones need to sort out battery life, because a day or not even that is simply not acceptable.
Another thing, calling in general. The iPhone is the main culprit of this, but the other smartphones can't tease it because they are not much better themselves. The iPhone drops calls, fact. But a general trend in smartphones is that call quality is rubbish, on both ends. The other thing is, if you have a touchscreen on your face, it gets awfully sticky when using it, so you see people parading down the street with their earphones in screaming at the bottom of their devices.
They are also quite dependent on a 3G connection, lose that and your phone isn't quite reaching its full potential. I must admit to having turned my phone off 3G to conserve battery, it doesn't affect call quality and texts aren't that much slower to send and it runs in the background anyway so I don't care.
But, the thing is, people love smartphones. Their market share is increasing by the day and I think there will soon be a day when there is no such thing as a "smartphone" or a "simple phone" because every phone will have great features which make most of them equal.

Never had a dropped call or call quality issues on my iPhone 3G or 1st gen iPhone. I seem to get a very good 3G connection wherever I am but admittedly coverage can be patchy in other parts of the country. Battery life can be a bit of an issue sometimes, but in general, I don't mind having to put my iPhone on charge at the end of each day - literally every phone I have had in the past 5 or 6 years have needed a daily charge so I've come to accept it ;)
The 1st gen iPhone tended not to drop calls, so maybe it is the 3G side of it. I just couldn't imagine having to charge my phone every day. My N95 needed charge every 2, but I gave that back I hated the battery so much. Do you not find during calls that the screen gets all mucky on your face?
Even still, my iPhone 3G hasn't dropped any calls. It could happen for lots of reasons, not particularly just down to the device, it could be down to the network and the number of concurrent connections in the cell area. As for the mucky screen, it tends to get mucky with the tapping, swiping and pinching anyway, but I have had mucky screens after calls with other phones in the past :)
Do you have a screen protector for it? If so, does that help?
No I couldn't be bothered with screen protectors as I'm rubbish at putting them on! I trust the scratch resistant glass!
Good luck then
