iTunes 9: new features and alternatives

At Apple’s “It’s only Rock and Roll” event in September, iTunes 9 was released. It unfortunately did not feature blu-ray as many had hoped, but we did receive quite a few juicy updates for our computers.
Chief of which is the redesigned iTunes store. It did look a bit old before the update so apple has refreshed it in a number of ways to help you buy their music. In my view the app store is a bit harder to use, but it does now have a genius feature built into it to smooth things out. iTunes LP was another major update. This is a new incentive for music lovers to download from iTunes instead of torrent sites. It features extras like lyrics and videos. Home Sharing is a feature for houses with multiple iTunes enabled computers. You can share your music and everything else wirelessly from one computer to another. It is a bliss to use and so much easier than plugging your iPod into every computer to retrieve your tunes. Syncing has also been improved, it is much easier to use and now enables you to customize your iPod touch or iPhone’s homescreens directly from your computer to save you the hassle of having to do it on the screen. There are other little improvements, like wishlists for iTunes and Twitter.
Now, as well as using iTunes, there are many other alternatives to this piece of software which has its fair share of haters. My personal favourite is Media Go. It is great to use, just scan your computer and you get all your songs arranged like on iTunes. It lets you transfer music to your iPod as well so it is possible to completely replace with. There are other media managers but these two are my personal favourite as they are endorsed by two of the biggest names in the business, and they are a bliss to use.
