Spotify vs Last.fm

Over the past few months, there has been a lot of speculation about the spotify app for the iphone. This has lead to a lot more spotify users and now it has reached the point where it is invitation only for the free spotify version. I am lucky, I downloaded it in time, so I am now able to compare spotify desktop alongside last.fm.

The concepts are quite different yet very similar. Spotify is a music streaming service whereas last.fm is more of a radio. Last.fm has no adverts in the free version, which is a huge bonus. Spotify has an ad after every 3 tracks or so. Spotify has a playlist feature which is good, but last.fm has something called scrobbling which enables you to save a record of what you have played from your ipod or iphone to the last.fm website and then play your whole library from there. This is great because you can listen to your library mobile with a last.fm mobile app.

Spotify is different as it is only there to provide a means of playing music from the internet as opposed to your own music. It has recommendations and a radio service similar to last.fm, but is left short of the tons of other features. Last.fm has an events section, telling you when your favourite bands are coming to play at a stadium near you, which is handy if you like live music.

In my personal view, last.fm tips spotify, but if you are lucky enough to have the two alongside your other music, you are covered in that means.

You can scrobble what you listen to via Spotify. Whilst I use last to mainly chart everything I listen to, the radio feature relies heavily on who you befriend. I've added friends that don't care, but have found people with similar music interests, which has also led to me discovering new music. BBC Radio stations are pretty good stations too, as they tend to scrobble what they play during the day.

Yeah, but what I was implying was that last.fm and spotify are different sorts of internet radio providers.
