November's biggest hits

First of all, the great post to start the month was the announcement of Sony Ericsson's first Android phone, the X10.

Then came Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 2. It broke history for a video game.

Google then entered the fray with Chrome OS which I got invited to.

Apple wasn't going to go away though, with iPhone being announced on Tesco Mobile in the UK. And also the rumours of an iPhone 4G.

We are set for a busy christmas here at technokratos so don't be disheartened if posts drop short around the new year. But don't despair, because christmas is round the corner and we will all be adding gadgets to our christmas lists (i hope so).

Here's to a good month.

iPhone 4G on the way?

This could well be the iPhone 4G.

It is flying around the web and rumours are not stopping.

It is said to have a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.

Let's hope it has a decent camera and multi-tasking.

What do you want in it? Comment below

Vodafone free internet day

Today, Vodafone is giving all their customers free internet. That's it, basically. I have used it, and tweeted about loving it. There really isn't much more to say, but, visit technokratos on your mobile more often!

Apple deals today, or are they?

Today is Apple's Black Friday sale day, and some deals are to be snapped up from their online or real life stores. But, after a bit of research, I have found that there are very few deals to be found. For example, the only iPod that is cheaper than on Amazon is the 64GB Touch, which is still really expensive.

So, if there are no deals in the iPod range, what else is there? Well, Mac wise, the Macbook Pro is on deal, still more expensive than Amazon, and the iMac is on sale, this is the only thing cheaper than on amazon, but that is for the 21.5" model.

So, are you stealing any deals? Comment below as we love hearing your comments.

Gutted all who don't have it, but I am sooooo in love with it.

iPhone everywhere! (part 2)

You may remember a few weeks ago we announced the iPhone would be on Orange and Vodafone, as well as o2 because of their exclusivity deal ending. And now, a 4th contender is entering the fray, Tesco Mobile. They aim to launch it before Christmas, so they would pip Vodafone to offering it. Hopefully, they will start a price war we so desperately want. However, I don't think this is going to happen. That is because Tesco mobile is a 50:50 venture between Tesco and o2, so o2 wouldn't want to undercut themselves, by themselves. Also, since Tesco uses o2s' towers, the 3G coverage wouldn't be exceptional, but o2 is investing in them. I think that this is good for another network to have the iPhone, because i hate exclusive deals. It is due out soon, so keep your eyes peeled because things could hotten up.

Introducing, the Nokia 6700 and 7230 sliders

Nokia 7230 Slide

Nokia 6700 Slide

Pictured above are the 2 new Nokia slider phones. They have come out of nowhere, with no rumours coming from the internet. They won't be out in time for Christmas, unfortunately, but some new years bargains might mean you can snap them up for less than the £100 and £165 expected prices for the 7230 and 6700 respectively. These phones are relatively middle-market, "dumb phones" if you will. But hold on, the 6700 is packing some Symbian S60 whilst the 7230 has S40, so they are no idiots by any means. The 6700 is available in Petrol Blue, Purple, Pink, Red, Lime and Raw Aluminum colours, and 7230 in Graphite and Hot Pink. Cool, huh? They are pretty standard phones for this type, so don't expect anything wonderful. Let's wait until they're out before making any assumptions, but I think that they will be big hits, maybe not the 6700 on PAYG because over £150 is quite a lot, but that on a cheap pay monthly and the 7230 on PAYG and you're in for a flyer if you're a network operator.

Symbian gets Spotify

Spotify mobile has been available on iPhone and Android for a while now, and, not wanting to be left behind, Symbian now has it on their app store. It is similar to iPhone and Android models, with offline playlists and the necessity for £10 a month subscription. This means 21 Nokia phones and the Sony Ericsson Satio and Samsung i8910HD also have it available for their usage. This probably won't be a huge hit, but it is there if you want it.

Google Wave

I am very lucky in the sense that I have been invited to join Google Wave. I, of course, accepted and launched myself into the site. It is currently in a preview stage but you can easily see the potential it has. It is a bit of a cross between email and instant messaging. Only the instant messaging is way cooler. You see the typing live, so it's actually like a conversation. You also get add ons. Below is a picture of the Sudoku add on I am awful at. There is one thing I don't understand about it, however. And that is because the whole point of Wave is to have all your contacts there, but if only a few hundred thousand people have it, then that is not going to work. Out of 1000 people at my school and teachers, only I have it. Same case with the rest of my family, nobody has it. Emails and threads are all sorted into waves, which is a neat idea but people need to understand the concept first. I can see this being used in the business sector, for live meetings, and also social networking. But once it is out of preview stage, I am sure this will be a HUGE hit.

Modern Warfare 2 boosting is the way forward!

Recently, after playing a GREAT deal of the new call of duty i started looking for alternative ways of ranking up faster. It pained me to see that one of my friends was pwning me. The solution, BHL boosting. Its essentially cheating to rank up very quicky, if you interested go to www.boostershotline.com and sign up for free. From there you can click links to get invitations into certain parties (on your xbox) and you can riot shield, nuke and domination boost. Personally i recommend you riot shield boost as it is the quickest but it gives you no score, but if you require score then domination boost. If you need anymore information check out BHL channel on youtube.com Also if anyone wants a step by step boosting tutorial, just comment below with whaat you need to know or add on xbox- X iIMPIi X happy boosting coough cheating

Android on netbooks: why?

I was thinking, why have android on a netbook? Because, with Chrome OS on the way, Android would be obsolete immediately. So, laptop companies are shooting themselves in the foot by announcing Android on laptops, because they are doomed.

Blackberry 9100 spotted in the wild

I have to admit to liking Blackberrys. I think they have great credentials and are great phones as well as computers. I never really liked the Pearl 8100, but now there seems to be a new one around the corner, the 9100 Pearl. Looking to feature a trackpad, another on Blackberry's lineup. It also seems to be packing 3G, something that some Blackberrys seem to miss, even though it is a necessity in a modern phone. It has the same keyboard, love it or hate it with Surepress. I think this phone is bound for success, after how well the original Pearl did, this is sure to capatalise on the original's great success.

Thought the PSP Go was fast? Think again.

The PSP Go runs all its games from flash memory, so you'd expect it to be quicker. But it isn't, as the video below shows.

The game is Gran Turismo PSP, which I have a full review of here.

O2 investing in networks

O2 has some of the worst 3G coverage in the UK, so they have announced that they will be spending over £500 million on improving their 3G and HSDPA coverage. But, quite frankly, I think it's too little, too late. Because Orange have way better coverage, and O2 must accept poor investments in the first place and work on securing mobile phones that will help them as a company, not signal that won't as much. But, they are also concentrating on London, which must be a good thing? NO! It's useless for most of us in the UK! If you look at the picture above you will see that Scotland, Wales and Ireland are all almost empty! Work on the whole of the UK then concentrate on London, for the greater good.

PSN adds videos

Pictured above is the PSN video store through their desktop software, Media Go. They have launched a new video service, allowing you to download full movies to keep or rent. As such, there is no HD. But the fact that the PS3 is HD would imply that soon Sony is going to put in HD videos. The service is good, with a nice collection of movies to choose from. Personally, I don't think it will do nearly as well as iTunes store for a number of reasons. One of which is Sony doesn't have a huge music and media player. It has the PSP which is good, but miles behind iPod. This video release also times with Media Go software 1.3 release, which is better but flawed as before. My thoughts about it are here. What do you think about the PSN video service? Will you use it, or keep with iTunes? Comment below as it's great hearing from you.

Google Chrome OS: vids are out!

YouTube launches UK TV

YouTube has launched a new shows section for UK users as it taps into rising online demand for full-length television programmes.

The new section provides the first shows from a landmark deal with Channel 4 announced last month and will include full-length episodes of Peep Show, Hollyoaks, Gordon Ramsay's F Word and Jamie at Home. Shows from other media partners include Dead Ringers, ITN News and Baywatch.

At launch, YouTube is posting around 5,000 videos, of which almost 4,000 are full-length programmes, from more than 60 partners. YouTube said it "expects this to significantly increase in the coming months" and the full range of Channel 4 shows will be available in early 2010.

For established broadcasters, including Channel 4, partnering with YouTube is a response to the trend of both viewers and advertisers leaving television channels for the internet. Channel 4 is hoping that posting content on YouTube can bring in new advertising revenues.

All programmes on the shows section will be available free of charge and, where the content owner has enabled it, they will carry advertising. Channel 4's shows will feature advertisers including Virgin Media, Universal, Orange, Samsung and Pepsi.

Patrick Walker, YouTube's video partnerships director, said the launch would bring more big-brand programmes to viewers on top of the site's home-made clips.

"The shows section of the site will make it easier for users to discover videos from the biggest names in British broadcasting, and help our content partners reach new audiences and generate new revenues," he said.

Google, YouTube's parent company, has been working hard to convince the rights holders of music, film and TV shows to make advertising revenue from their content rather than remove it from the video-sharing site for breach of copyright.

By putting advertising with clips, YouTube makes money from revenue sharing deals with the rights holders.

PSN to remain free

Just the other day, I tweeted about my PSN not working. And after a twitter search I found that was popular, one of my followers even retweeted what I was saying. It is annoying when the servers go down, because it not only affects the psp I was on, but also those playing Modern Warefare 2. They were unable to go online at some points last week and that must have been irritating for them, to say the least. But recently there have been rumours that PSN will now be a paid-for service, causing outrage as one of the reasons PS3 works out cheaper than Xbox is because of included online play if you so desire. Now Sony has told TechRadar that it will not be introducing a paid-for model. A person told them, We're continually looking at offering new forms of premium content & services, that will further enhance consumers experiences & expectations of the PSN,". And Kaz Hirai, top dog at Sony, has also said,"SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network...Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services."

So, would you pay for PSN? Millions do for Xbox, but in my view it is just a bit late for SONY to announce this because people would be outraged and SONY would lose all its market share.

Sky mobile on iPhone free for 3 months

The Sky Mobile app for iPhone is a good idea. Granted. What is a better idea is this, having it free for 3 months. Just text SKY to 2020 to receive your promotional code, then download the app and create a new account and enter the code. You will need a valid credit card but you won't be charged if you decide to cancel before the 3 months are up, however if you decide to keep subscribing the cost is only £6 a month (and you do not need to be an actual Sky customer). The channels you get are: Sky Sports 1, 2 & 3 Sky Sports Extra Sky Sports News ESPN Sky News The app only works via wifi, however. But the trial offer is only available to the first 150k subscribers! So quick, download the app now!

Vodafone offers free texts for Friday

Vodafone often gives free stuff for a day or few, in the summer it gave free Facebook access for 3 days as one example. And this Friday, they are letting every customer, PAYG and contract, have 100 free texts that won't go onto their bill. They are saying that you can, "text the world" so naturally, you can text your friends abroad at no cost. Sound too good to be true? Well, MMS aren't included in this deal, and you're limited to 100, but that's it. So, this friday, get texting!

Nokia E72 out on Vodafone

The Nokia E72 had been on the Vodafone coming soon page for yonks, to say the least. But now it is out for purchase. It is free on £30 a month for 2 years and is said to be £300 on PAYG. What's better than the E71? Well, this phone has a nice 5MP snapper under the bonnet, alongside GPS and a full QWERTY keyboard. There is also Wifi, HSDPA, quadband and all the other stuff you'd expect from modern day smartphones. It has a claimed 20 days of battery on standby, with 12 hours talk time. So this would be a handy alternative to a Blackberry Curve if you feel the desire to stray away from arguably the best in this field. It is available here but the details page isn't working yet. But expect some sort of 600 minutes and unlimited texts and web.

iTunes letting facebook users choose People's choice awards

At the end of the year, and decade for that matter, it is time for stuff of the decade and year to begin. So iTunes is letting facebook users choose the People's choice song and album of the year. You can vote here on facebook provided you are using it. Artists include Kings of Leon, Killers, Cheryl Cole, Black Eyed Peas and so on. I voted for "Sex on Fire" as song, and "Day and Age" as album. What have you voted for? Comment below to see who will win the voting.

Bing loses Beta tag

(stuff.tv)

Google may own most of the market share in internet search engines at 80%, but that hasn't stopped Yahoo! and Microsoft from trying to defeat them. Together they have made a monster search engine called Bing, which until today had a Beta tag on it. From today onwards it is fully functioning. It works with twitter so you can see what is happening in the world as it happens, but that is the same as Google. My favourite feature of it is the weather, say I type in "weather for manchester" into the search web bar, the automatic one, I receive first on the list a great weather forecast from Foreca, a big name in the business. I tried the same for Google and the differences are astounding, down below are some snapshots of them. Click on them for larger images.

New Samsung M1 packing Vodafone 360

Pictured above is the Samsung M1, it is basically a cheaper version of the H1. It is still packing Vodafone 360, amongst other things such as: cool neon red colour which I really like, GPS which I have never used on any phone, a touchscreen which I am not sure whether it will be resistive or capacitive but more likely to be the later of the 2 considering this is a relatively cheap phone, it also backs up all your stuff online which I think is cool but must work unlike T-Mobile Sidekick which failed in the US. Mega bonus is that it is free on a £20 a month deal on Vodafone which gives 75 minutes and 250 texts alongside unlimited internet. This is a bargain compared to the £35 a month H1, even though it is likely to have a better touchscreen, it isn't available in Neon, which is the deciding factor for me.

Vodafone gives new compare features on website

Vodafone has given a new feature on its website, it may be basic, but it's really useful. It's the compare feature, used to compare up to 3 phones. Really useful. You should check it out here.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warefare 2 breaks gaming history

We all knew Modern Warefare 2 was going to be great. Ever since World at War was launched, it seems that the whole gaming community has been gearing up for this release. And so it seems, has the public. They have gone out and bought 1.23 million copies on the first day of its release! This game is the best selling game of all time on its first day of release, trumping Grand Theft Auto IV by 1.23 million to 631000 copies. It has been criticised for its violence, but it is an 18, so anyone who is playing it should expect what they will see.

This game also has an effect on people. I know people who have stayed off school and work to play this game, that is how much it has been anticipated. Our very own Matthew here at the Tech Stop went to ASDA at 12pm with 600 other gamers to purchase this for just £32 soon after it was launched. All this shows how much of an effect this game has had, and no doubt it will be absolutely fantastic to play. Matthew will, I'm sure, write about it in due course, as I personally have not yet had the chance to play it.

Vodafone take the HTC HD2

(stuff.tv)

The HTC HD2 is arguably the best Windows Mobile handset out there, and Vodafone has now put it up for sale on their page. It will be free on a £35 a month, 2 year deal, as the standard seems to be nowadays. I personally hate those contracts, but people seem to be abiding to them. Back to the phone, we first announced its deets here and it was rumoured to be on mobiles.co.uk from yesterday. Let's hope this is the best 6.5 Windows phone there is, because just about everything else is rubbish. It probably won't sell in enormous numbers like the iPhone, but it is still a great phone.

Vodafone brings out 533 Crystal

Pictured above is the Vodafone 533 Crystal. It costs £90, which is more than twice the price of the normal 533, which is at £40. But, it has a party piece, 126 Swarovski Elements on it. The phone also has a 1.3mp camera and a Vodafone Freedom Pack consisting of 100 minutes and 300 texts worth £50. It is only available on Vodafone, pretty obvious considering their name is on it. Is this just a gimmick or actually quite cool? Have your say down below as we love hearing from you.

Orange sells 30000 iPhones on day 1

Orange started selling the iPhone 3GS on the 10th, and already they have sold 30000 of them on the first day. This is probably going to break mobile phone records. Orange seems to have lured people in by having slightly better contracts and promising better reception. Vodafone will also start selling the iPhone at the start of next year, still with no word on prices.

Hopes of a Wii HD crushed

(cnet)

Remember when there were rumours about there being a Wii HD? Well they have all but been crushed, with Reggie Fils-Aime, head of Nintendo US saying, "I don't know how forcefully we can say there is no Wii HD."

So oh well, it was nice to think there would be one, before our dreams were shattered. Do you want a Wii HD? Wish it were true? Comment below then.

Amazon.co.uk as brisk as ever

I recently ordered this item from Amazon.co.uk on Free Super Saver delivery. That was on thursday night, today is monday afternoon, and it is here already! That is great considering the fact that there are postal strikes on and this service has been disrupted over the past few weeks. A big well done and thank you to amazon.co.uk for my hard drive which I shall post about soon.

Why Smartphones are rubbish

Smartphones are great, aren't they? They are fantastic little computers in their own right. Many of them have application stores, which can do just about everything. They are pioneering technology of today, and showing what the world can squeeze onto a tiny device. But they might be great computers, but I'm sorry, several of them are awful phones, most in fact. The only exception I can think of is Blackberry, they don't suffer from the fatigues of many smartphones.

One of many is battery life. You hear of reviewers saying that phones get a day's charge. I'm sorry, but that's frankly awful! My 2 year old Sony gets at least a week, as with most of my friends' "dumbphones". This is probably due to the fact that they are always connected to the internet through a 3G, Wifi, or GPS signal. You can literally see the difference after a decent spell on the internet or downloading something on the fly. I think these phones need to sort out battery life, because a day or not even that is simply not acceptable.

Another thing, calling in general. The iPhone is the main culprit of this, but the other smartphones can't tease it because they are not much better themselves. The iPhone drops calls, fact. But a general trend in smartphones is that call quality is rubbish, on both ends. The other thing is, if you have a touchscreen on your face, it gets awfully sticky when using it, so you see people parading down the street with their earphones in screaming at the bottom of their devices.

They are also quite dependent on a 3G connection, lose that and your phone isn't quite reaching its full potential. I must admit to having turned my phone off 3G to conserve battery, it doesn't affect call quality and texts aren't that much slower to send and it runs in the background anyway so I don't care.

But, the thing is, people love smartphones. Their market share is increasing by the day and I think there will soon be a day when there is no such thing as a "smartphone" or a "simple phone" because every phone will have great features which make most of them equal.

"Spotify" HTC Hero now out on 3

A while ago, we announced that the HTC Hero would be arriving to 3 and that it would be including a 2 year spotify premium contract as well. The contract also has 750 minutes, 1GB "unlimited" internet, 2000 minutes "unlimited" 3-3 calls, and 3000 "unlimited" text messages. It is now out on the 3 website, so you can buy it for a £97.86 upfront cost as well as the contract here.

Touchscreens, why?

Nowadays just about every smartphone nowadays seems to be a touch screen. Even budget phones now have touchcsreens, take the LG Pop as a prime example. I personally think that touch screens are not that great. Many recent satisfaction surveys have shown that touch screens are not that great for the general public. I have tried many touchscreens, both resistive and capacitive, and I did not enjoy using them. I have just not liked typing. On screen keyboards mean that your fingers are always covering the screen, so you cannot really fully see what you are writing. This is just me though, there are many people who like touchcsreens but I just have to say that I am not one of them.

New LG budget-toucscreen phone

It seems the world can't get enough of touch screens. They are literally taking over. One of the main examples is the LG Cookie, a 3" touchscreen that cost less than £100. This new version of it, called the Pop follows the same recipe. Set to be £99.95 from the Carphone Warehouse on PAYG, this is running the S-Class interface seen on LG's top end models of today. This features widgets and multiple homescreens like many high end smartphones of today, and also cheaper versions like the Samsung Genio. It has a nice MicroSD slot of up to 8GB for media, and a 3MP camera to snap stuff.
(Via TechRadar)

The N97 Mini: why?

When the Nokia N97 Mini was announced, everyone seemed to think that this newer, smaller, less feature filled phone would cost a lot less. But in fact, it costs the same as the 32GB N97, £35 a month for 2 years on vodafone. The screen size on the Mini is 3.2" as opposed to the full fat version's 3.5", which isn't that much of a difference as you can see above. It is 12g lighter, and also smaller in every department size wise. The battery life is worse on the Mini though, 320 hours standby as opposed to 400 on the normal version. The internal memory is also down from 32GB to 8GB, which is a huge drop. The D-pad is also absent on the Mini, probably the only reason for the decrease in size. So, in my view, I think the N97 Mini is pointless compared to the normal N97. It is no cheaper and has fewer features for a tiny bit smaller, which you will hardly notice. In my opinion, buy the full on N97 and you won't be dissapointed (as much).

Steve Jobs voted CEO of the decade

(cnn)

Steve Jobs is probably one of the most iconic faces of the tech industry. His use of adjectives is simply mind-blowing. He runs Apple, who make some nice devices including Mac, iPod and iPhone. He has also just been voted the CEO of the decade by Fortune magazine. At 54 years, he is actually older than the internet. But that's a good thing, because that means that he is in touch with it. He has transformed Apple from being worth $5 billion in 2000 to worth $170 billion at this present date. He is simply great, and it will be a sad day when he leaves Apple. So, well done to Steve Jobs for a great 10 years at Apple (and giving us the iPod!)

Error 404 on iTunes

I was just trying to download the t3 podcast from iTunes, and it just wouldn't let me. I couldn't understand why, I had the Engadget podcast from just minutes earlier, so I saw that this was error 404. This is basically an error that is not the fault of your iTunes but the podcast directory itself. You should be safe in the fact that nothing is wrong and it should be sorted soon. Basically I am now reassuring myself I will have my weekly podcast a day after normal, which isn't too bad. Have you ever had error 404 on iTunes? Share your experiences below.

HD Wii on the way?

We recently announced the limited edition black Wii and now the top guns at Nintendo have hinted at an HD Wii. GM of Nintendo's R&D division, Genya Takeda, said it would be a "natural" move for the console. He also said that, "Since an increasing number of the TV sets at home around the world are becoming HD today, it will be natural for a machine to be able to generate graphics that people will be accustomed to see on HD televisions. Since the ordinary TV programs are now shifting to HD, moving to HD appears to me a natural flow." Shigeru Miyomoto, another big guy at Nintendo said, "We probably cannot swim against the tide. The customers' tastes will become more and more refined. Even today, many customers who have seen HD once say they cannot go back to SD. We have to ask ourselves if HD is really necessary to develop Wii Fit. Won't HD be better for the games like Pikmin? The developers should choose the most appropriate graphical format depending on the software they make."

I personally think that an HD Wii is a good idea, because it means the social console also boasts some of the features of the PS3 and Xbox. But I still think that the Wii is for social gaming mainly, serious gamers should go for an Xbox or a PS3. Gaming on a PC is there, but can't really match the full on gaming consoles in my view. Portable gaming is also a fight between the PSP and DSi, with the iPod touch threatening with casual gaming. I think the iPod touch is the Wii of portable gaming. Then you have the laptop portable gaming for the hardcore ones amongst the world.

LittleBigPlanet PSP: release date announced

The release date for the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet has been announced. Dated for a US release on November 17, and a UK release on the 20th, this game looks to be hot on the christmas lists, it is definitely on mine! So far there has been no word whether this game will be available for download over Media Go software for the psp go, but the UMD version is a certainty. I am really looking forward to this game on the psp, it looks to pack a lot of features and being able to play it on the train is an added bonus for anyone in my view. The trailer is down below, I think it looks great, what are your thoughts? Comment below as we love hearing from you.

Google launches Dashboard

It seems Google can't stop with the new products. They recently announced a music search feature on their search engine. And now they have launched Dashboard, a way of seeing all the information you have given to Google over its many years of service. As quite a user of Google products, I have quite a long list of things but I'm sure there'll be people who only use Gmail. If you do see something you don't want people to know, just click on the "Manage" button on the right in blue and change it if you want. This is a useful feature but won't be used as widely as something like their maps service. But at least Google are helping the user, as opposed to ripping them off to their own content. Well done, Google. Keep up the good work.
